Policies
The Lighthouse School Policies
Our policies are in place to support the safety, comfort, and learning of every child at The Lighthouse School. We encourage families to review the information below so you can better understand how we care for your child and create a safe, supportive environment each day.
If you have any questions about our policies or need clarification, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always happy to help
Rest, Quiet, and Nap Time
- Children under 5 have daily quiet/rest periods after lunch to support healthy development
- Infants follow individual nap schedules
- For children who do not sleep, soft music or stories are offered as alternatives
Each child will receive a labeled cot, a blanket, and a cot sheet. All are washed and sanitized weekly or as needed.
Personal Items and Dress Code

- Toy guns, war toys, and destructive items are prohibited

- Provide two sets of extra clothes to keep at school. All clothing should be labeled. Guidelines:
- Closed shoes required

Infant Safety
- Diaper bags should only include necessary items
- Infants are always placed on their backs to sleep unless a physician provides alternate instructions
- Pacifiers and bottles are used according to safe handling practices
- Avoid accessories such as barrettes, rings, and necklaces to prevent choking hazards
Birthday Parties and Special Events
- Notify teachers in advance for birthday celebrations
- Snacks must meet special dietary needs and be peanut-free
- Balloons and hard/chewy candy are not allowed
- Party invitations should only be distributed if the entire class is invited
Discipline and Guidance
Challenging behaviors are addressed with redirection and encouragement. Depending on the situation, our staff will follow these steps:
- Brief “quiet time” or “think time” (1 minute per year of age)
- Behavior reports and meetings with parents, if needed
- Suspension or dismissal may follow if behavior continues
Our forms of discipline are positive, individualized, and age-appropriate. The focus is on teaching acceptable behavior and self-control. Prohibited discipline methods include:
- Corporal punishment, threats, or shaming
- Withholding food, naps, or bathroom use
- Excessive quiet time or physical punishment
Suspension may range from 1 day to 1 week. Immediate dismissal may occur if a child’s behavior endangers themselves, others, or staff. Dismissal may also result from repeated policy violations, non-payment, or extended unapproved absences.
Toilet Training
- Toilet training begins around age 2 and is coordinated with parents
- Success is achieved with consistent, positive encouragement
- Children must be potty-trained for Preschool 2, Pre-K, and Kindergarten enrollment
Biting Policy
- Biting is developmentally common in children 9–30 months
- Staff will redirect and provide alternative communication methods
- Parents are notified when their child is bitten; the identity of the biter is kept confidential
- Chronic biting may result in removal from the program if all strategies fail
Lost and Found
Please label all items your child brings. While we will save items left behind with your child’s name, the school is not responsible for lost items.
Breastfeeding
A private space is provided for nursing mothers. Breast milk is stored safely in the infant room refrigerator and warmed as needed.
Transportation and Field Trips
- Parents are responsible for daily transportation, except for school-age pickup/drop-off or approved field trips
- Lighthouse School vehicles meet all state safety standards, are equipped with first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and seat restraints
- Staff/drivers are trained, CPR & First Aid certified, and follow all safety protocols
- Emergency procedures and passenger logs are maintained for every trip
- Travel time is limited to 45 minutes one way unless prior permission is given
- During field trips:
- Parents must sign permission slips
- Children wear visible identification during trips
- Water, snacks, and medical supplies accompany children
Screen Time
- Screen time is limited to educational purposes only
- Children over 2 years of age receive less than 1 hour per day, typically during transitional activities
- School-age children may use technology as needed for homework or learning activities
